The Association for the Integrated Rural Development (A.I.R.D.) of la Ribera del Duero Burgalesa is a district wide, non-profit making organisation that was set up in 1996 with the objective of serving as a meeting point and as a representative mechanism for all local interested parties, ie. individuals and both public and private entities interested in the integrated development of the district of la Ribera del Duero, in the province of Burgos, some one hundred miles north of Madrid.
Among its aims is that of serving as a promoter of the endogenous, sustained development of the district. It strives for the support of the rural population and for an improvement in the income and the social wellbeing of the local people. It also seeks to ensure the conservation of the local environment and its natural resources. It also endeavours to raise awareness among the local people and to encourage them to take on responsibility for the development of the district. Finally, it seeks to raise the level of awareness among the Local, Community, Provincial and National Governments, and to mobilise those authorities to ensure the provision of the best possible financial support to facilitate the setting up and management of the district wide development plans.
This is the organisation for which the Ministry of Agriculture of the Regional Government has approved a Local Development Plan covering its (the L.A.G.`s) range of activities. With this approval and with the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Regional Government and the National Ministry of Agriculture the L.A.G. has now become a partner of the Government,
The A.I.R.D. of the Ribera del Duero Burgalesa has been a Local Action Group since 1996 and has administered two Rural Development Plans: PRODER (1996-1999) and PRODERCAL (2000-2006). A new Programme, known as LEADERCAL, has recently been approved (2007-2013).
